The Wire is an American television drama series set in Baltimore, Maryland, where it was also produced. Created, produced, and primarily written by author and former police reporter David Simon, the series was broadcast by the premium cable network HBO in the United States. The Wire premiered on June 2, 2002 and ended on March 9, 2008, with 60 episodes airing over the course of its five seasons.
Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. They are, in order: the drug trade, the port, the city government and bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media. The large cast consists mainly of character actors who are little known for their other roles. Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how "whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge [or] lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."
Despite never seeing large commercial success or winning any Emmy Awards, The Wire has frequently been described by critics as one of the greatest television series of all time. The show is recognized for its realistic portrayal of urban life, artistic ambitions, and uncommonly deep exploration of sociopolitical themes.

'Doctor Who' is the longest-running science fiction television series in the world. From its humble beginnings on BBC1 on Saturday November 23rd, 1963, the show has appeared on television, radio, cinema, stage, books, comics, records, CDs, and even on the internet.

The series chronicles the adventures of the Doctor, an enigmatic Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who has two hearts, a brilliant, if eccentric, mind, and the ability to regenerate into a completely different physical form. The Doctor travels in a time-and-space machine called the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), which looks just like a battered old London Police Telephone Box, and, assisted by a host of loyal companions, he fights evil in all its monstrous shapes and forms, including the ruthless mutant Daleks in their armoured travel machines; the emotionless Cybermen from Earth's sister planet, Mondas; the Sontarans, a warrior race of clones; and the deadly Ice Warriors from Mars...

To date, there have been ten television incarnations of the Doctor - played by William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. Peter Cushing played 'Dr Who' in two 1960s movies, Trevor Martin took on the role in a 1970s stage play, and lots more actors in various spoof, skits and homages across the years.

The series is still going strong, with the BBC releasing new novels (which the Guinness Book of Records acknowledges as the longest running book series in the world); Big Finish Productions producing new audio adventures; and the BBC’s website hosting in-depth articles and features on the new television series. Not only that, but there are currently two spin-off shows gracing our screens, both featuring former companions of the Doctor: 'Torchwood', with Captain Jack Harkness; and 'The Sarah Jane Adventures', with reporter Sarah Jane Smith. (Filming is also underway in Australia on a new, non-BBC, series called 'K9', which is expected to air on Australia's Network Ten and UK digital channel Jetix/Disney XD in the autumn; it remains to be seen if this show is canonical - let's hope not, as so far, all trailers look terrible...)

2009 will bring four more 'Doctor Who' specials featuring the Tenth Doctor, and 2010 brings another full season of adventures - but this time, with a new, Eleventh Doctor played by Matt Smith! It looks like the adventures of the good Doctor and his companions will continue for some time to come!

Band of Brothers is a ten-part television World War II miniseries based on the book of the same title written by historian and biographer Stephen Ambrose. It was executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks after their successful collaboration on the Academy Award-winning World War II film Saving Private Ryan (1998). The episodes first aired in 2001 on HBO and is still run frequently on various TV networks around the world.

The narrative centers on the experiences of E Company ("Easy Company") of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, from Easy's basic training at Toccoa, Georgia, through the American airborne landings in Normandy, Operation Market Garden, the Battle of Bastogne and on to the end of the war.

The events portrayed are based on Ambrose's research and recorded interviews with Easy Company veterans. A lot of literary license has been taken with the episodes, and other reference books will highlight the differences between recorded history and the film version. All of the characters portrayed are based on actual members of Easy Company; some of them can be seen in prerecorded interviews as a prelude to each episode (their identities, however, are not revealed until the close of the finale).

A new 10-part miniseries from the creators of Band of Brothers (Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman), called The Pacific, is in development. The new production will focus on the Pacific Theater of Operations and the United States Marine Corps. The project is due out in 2009, although this is subject to change.

Deadwood was an American western–drama television series created, produced and almost entirely written by David Milch.[1][2] The series aired on the premium cable network HBO from 21 March 2004 to 27 August 2006, spanning three 12-episode seasons. Set in the 1870s in Deadwood, South Dakota, the show is set before and after the area's annexation by the Dakota Territory. The series charts Deadwood's growth from camp to town, incorporating themes ranging from the formation of communities to western capitalism. The show features a large ensemble cast, and many historical figures—such as Seth Bullock, Al Swearengen, Wild Bill Hickok, Sol Star, Calamity Jane, Wyatt Earp, E. B. Farnum, Charlie Utter, and George Hearst—appear as characters on the show. The plotlines involving these characters include historical truths as well as substantial fictional elements. Some of the characters are fully fictional, although they may have been based on actual persons. Deadwood received wide critical acclaim [3], won eight Emmy Awards (in 28 nominations) and one Golden Globe. It consistently drew high ratings.

Although there were initial plans to conclude the series with two special TV movies, the plans have not come to fruition. Several of the series' stars have since commented that the series is now unlikely to return. While HBO had repeatedly asserted that the two movies could still be made, it noted in July 2008 that the possibility of the two TV movies being made was very slim.

The Man Show was a half hour American comedy television show on Comedy Central. It was created in 1999 by its two original co-hosts, Jimmy Kimmel and Adam Carolla, and their executive producer Daniel Kellison.
The Man Show celebrated the stereotypical loutish male perspective in a sexually charged, humorous light. The show consisted of a variety of pre-recorded comedy sketches and live in-studio events, usually requiring audience participation.
The Man Show is particularly well-known for its buxom female models, the "Juggy Dance Squad", who would dance in themed, revealing costumes at the opening of every show, and in the aisles of the audience just before The Man Show went to commercial break. The first year of The Man Show featured beer-guzzling entertainer Bill "The Fox" Foster as the show's emcee. Hogan's Heroes is an American television situation comedy that ran for 168 episodes from September 17, 1965, to July 4, 1971, on the CBS network. Starring Bob Crane as Colonel Robert E. Hogan, the show was set in a German prisoner of war (POW) camp during the Second World War. The program featured Werner Klemperer as the commandant of the camp, Colonel Klink, and John Banner as the portly inept sergeant-of-the-guard, Schultz, as well as a crew of Allied prisoners who assisted Hogan in running a Resistance group from the camp.
Hogan's Heroes was produced by Bing Crosby Productions.
The setting was a fictional version of Stalag 13, a POW camp for captured airmen located near the town of Hammelburg and run by the Luftwaffe; its location was 106 kilometers from Heidelberg. It bore no resemblance to its real-life counterparts, Oflag XIII-B and Stalag XIII-C.
The show's premise was that the POWs were actually active war participants, using the camp as a base of operations for Allied espionage and sabotage against the Nazis. The prisoners could leave and return almost at will via a secret network of tunnels and had radio contact with Allied command. They were aided by the incompetence of the camp commandant, Colonel Klink, and the sergeant-of-the-guard, Sergeant Schultz. Hogan would routinely manipulate the incompetent Klink and get Schultz to look the other way while his men conducted secret operations. Klink and Schultz were in constant terror of being transferred to the Russian Front, and Hogan took pains to keep the hapless German duo firmly in place. Klink had a perfect record of no escapes while he commanded the POW camp. Hogan actually assisted in maintaining this record, and made sure any prisoners who needed to be spirited away had been transferred to someone else's authority before their escape was enacted. The program for a sitcom was unique as it combined elements of surrealism and dynamic action/adventure storytelling. Other examples of programs of the era that combined genres while reflecting general social tensions are Mission: Impossible and The Wild Wild West.
